Racist Motorist Ordered to Pay Compensation

A man driving a silver BMW in Hemel Hempstead launched racist abuse at a group of Asian men who crossed the road in front of him.

Matthew Goodman, 37, pulled a baseball bat from his boot and hit two of them, St Albans crown court heard on Friday.

Prosecutor Laura Blackband said Goodman was driving along Lawn Lane at 6pm on 2 July last year when a group of friends, who were mainly Asian, walked in front of his car. Goodman shouted appalling racist abuse at the group.

He took a baseball bat from the car and continued to shout abuse. One man was hit three times on the head and received an injury that needed stitches. Another was struck and received bruises to the arms.

Goodman drove off but the registration number of his car was taken down by several members of the put and he was asked to attend Hemel Hempstead police station.

Goodman, of Chipperfield Road, Apsley Hill, Hemel, pleaded guilty to two counts of racially aggravated assault. He had no previous convictions.

Emma Reed, defending, said Goodman was on job seeker's allowance. She said he was remorseful about what happened and would not normally have behaved in such a way.

Judge Andrew Bright QC sentenced him to 51 weeks' jail suspended for two years with 6 months' supervision. He must complete 140 hours unpaid work. He must pay Aumer Khan £1,250 and £250 to Idris Jamil.

The judge told him: "If you don't comply with this order you can expect to serve 51 weeks in prison. I hope this was out of character. If you behave like this again you can expect to go to prison for a very long time."
