Five arrested in dawn robbery raids

Five arrested in dawn robbery raids

Five people have been arrested in a series of dawn raids to combat street robbery in Harrow.

Officers from Operation Chappell moved in on addresses in Rayners Lane, Harrow Weald and Burnt Oak on Thursday morning.

The operation has been organised to reduce burglary and street robbery offences, with a rise in chain snatches and high value Indian gold jewellery reported across the borough.

Police say the addresses were targeted following work between them and pawnbrokers and gold buying businesses.

Three males were arrested on suspicion of robbery, with another person arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

Officers also took another person into custody on suspicion of criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.

Police say the raids followed work they had been doing with gold buying businesses and Harrow pawnbrokers.

"Today's operation went extremely well," said PC Richard Taylor. "We will continue to work closely with the gold buyers and pawnbrokers on the borough and to make Harrow a hostile environment for street criminals.

"We are telling people to cover their jewellery if they are in a public place, to be aware of who is around.

"If someone does try to grab your jewellery or bag, you should let it go rather than fighting to keep it."
