Fire highlights need for smoke alarms

London Fire Brigade says a fire in a Wembley house this week was a clear example of the importance of fitting smoke alarms.

Four people escaped unhurt from the fire in Tokyngton Avenue on Tuesday night, although one had to be treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

Flames broke out on the first floor of the house and also damaged part of the roof.

20 firefighters were called out to tackle the fire shortly before 11pm, with an investigation now underway into the cause.

LFB's Wembley Crew Manager, Stuart Smith, said the occupants were alerted by their smoke alarms.

He said: "This gave the occupiers an early warning and enough time to escape the fire uninjured. They only cost a fiver and are easy to fit.

"We can even fit them for you, all you need to do is arrange a home fire safety visit by calling us for free on 0800 028 44 28."
