Council helps get Diamond Jubilee street party started

Break out the bunting - celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and London's 2012 Olympic Games just got a whole lot easier for Harrow residents.

The Council is waiving its road closure fees to encourage residents to organise street parties, and is offering handy hints and tips too. It is making sure that cost and convenience are no barrier for residents wanting to celebrate the historic events so will not charge for officer time and advertising the necessary traffic orders to close roads.

In February the Council will also be publishing a special "How To" guiding encouraging more residents to volunteer, and it will include a special section on how to organise a street party.

Portfolio Holder for Environment and Community Safety, Cllr Phillip O'Dell said:

"We want to make sure that as many residents as possible can enjoy street parties in suitable locations across the borough by having a simple, no-nonsense application process. Anyone interested in planning a celebration with friends and neighbours will only have to make one simple call to the council to request a no-nonsense form.

"This is a unique year for London and we want Harrow residents to be part of the excitement and celebrations."

Harrow resident Linette Pooley held a street party for the Royal Wedding last year. Here she describes her experience and plans for this year.

"The whole process was so much easier than I thought it would be. The council was very helpful and it was literally just one form. We were talking about it recently and we are thinking about holding another one this year for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. I would recommend it, definitely, it was a lot of fun."
