Baby hit by lampost dies

A baby boy seriously injured by a falling lamp post in Chiswick has died.

He was pronounced dead at hospital at about 05:30hrs today, 25 February.

A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

A joint investigation is underway by officers from Hounslow CID and the Specialist Crime Directorate, and the Health and Safety Executive.

Police were called at 10:36hrs on Tuesday, 23 February to reports of a woman and a baby injured by a falling lamppost in Sutton Court Road W4, at the junction with Heathfield Terrace.

A woman in her early 60s was taken by the London Ambulance Service to New Charing Cross Hospital. She was discharged on 24 February.

A baby boy, believed to be aged approximately one year, was taken to hospital by air ambulance - he was pronounced dead at hospital at about 05:30hrs on 25 February.

No-one else was injured.

Contrary to earlier reports, the baby and the woman injured are not related and the woman was not pushing the pram which held the child at the time of the incident. It is understood the baby was with a woman carer who was not injured.
