SEEING CHILDREN IN THE DARK

Primary school children across Harrogate district are going to be safer walking to school in the winter thanks to the latest campaign by Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership.

Police Local Safer Neighbourhood teams will deliver 3,000 high visibility vests for year 1 and 2 pupils before the clocks go back.  The vests have been bought with funding the Partnership has received from 95 Alive, North Yorkshire's county-wide road safety partnership.

Councillor Les Ellington, Harrogate Council's Cabinet Member for Public Protection and chair of the Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership said:  "Children are more vulnerable in poor light conditions.  We want children to be able to walk to school so we need to do everything we can to make sure they can do so safely."

Phil Whild Chair of the Partnership's Road Safety Group said: "The Partnership has taken the opportunity to deliver many key messages as part of the distribution of the vests.  The Youth Justice Service and other volunteers have kindly donated their time to pack 3000 carrier bags to aid delivery to parents".

Harrogate Borough Council has also recently approved a number of new road safety initiatives in Harrogate and Knaresborough:

  • Two speed reduction platforms on Newby Crescent, Harrogate to reduce vehicle speeds at Saltergate Junior and Infants' school entrances
  • Minor amendments to the kerb lines on Skipton Road/Sykes Grove to improve pedestrian access to New Park School
  • A solar power light for the rear route to Oatlands Junior School
  • Speed reduction platform at Bilton Grange Primary School and guard railing on Bilton Lane and Skipton Road
  • 20mph speed limits in front of St John's CofE School in Knaresborough and Hookstone Chase Primary School, Harrogate
  • Traffic calming on Bogs Lane to discourage traffic rat running
  • Permanent traffic light signals at Halfpenny Lane, Knaresborough under the railway bridge
