Closed snowy roads in Gloucestershire 'were gritted'

Snow on Frocester Hill Motorists on Frocester Hill were affected by the weather

Roads closed in Gloucestershire as a result of the latest snow falls were gritted, the Highways Agency said.

Gritters were among the motorists stuck in traffic and police used 4x4s to get to crash scenes, when fresh snow fell across the county.

The A417 was among the roads closed while vehicles were recovered, and the roads re-ploughed and re-gritted.

Roads will be gritted again overnight as icy conditions are expected when the melting snow freezes.

A Highways Agency spokeswoman said: "I can only extend my apologies to those that were caught but we did treat the roads and, in actual fact, we pulled in gritters from other areas."

Melting snow

Stagecoach said all of their bus services in Gloucester were now operating as normal, but routes in the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley were still affected.

Fifty schools were closed because of the weather conditions on Wednesday.

Gloucestershire councillor Stan Waddington said: "Our gritting crews will treat all A and B roads in the early hours, but melting snow from the surrounding countryside will continue to wash salt away for several days and make the roads very wet."
