Burns book sheds new light

Burns book sheds new light

The inspiration of Robert Burns on some of the world's greatest writers has been documented by the University of Dundee as part of a commemorative book on Scotland's national bard for Homecoming 2009.

The book, For A' That, sheds new light on some of the seminal works of Burns and shares the personal views and love of Burns from leading writers including Booker Prize Winner, DBC Pierre, and Scottish writer Janice Galloway.

First Minister Alex Salmond hailed the book as a tribute to the "universal and timeless appeal of Burns words" at a reception in Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre recognising the work of everyone involved in Homecoming Scotland from the Tayside area.

The FM said:

"The contribution and enthusiasm shown by people in Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross - indeed throughout Tayside - for Homecoming Scotland has been outstanding and greatly boosted this year's celebrations.

"Homecoming Scotland is a celebration of the heart and soul of Scotland - golf, whisky, culture and heritage, great minds and innovation and of course, Burns.

"The University of Dundee, one of our finest academic institutions has brought together some of the best writers alive today to celebrate their connections with Robert Burns in the book titled For A' That.

"Communities in Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross have embraced the Year of Homecoming, showing that amid difficult times Scotland is extending the hand of friendship - and the hand of opportunity - while celebrating all that we have given to the world.

"The book will be launched three months from today at the Dundee Repertory Theatre by the University of Dundee and the William Harvey Trust, beginning a whole week of Homecoming Celebrations in Dundee and beyond. I wish everyone involved the very best in all their Homecoming ventures."
