"More European English Language Teachers Complete Course in Dunfermline" reports West Fife SNP Councillor William Walker

A further group of European English Language teachers has completed a residential two-week visit and study course in Dunfermline, now the Scottish base of "International Studies Programmes"  (ISP) of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. (See  photgraph).

Entitled "Focus on Scotland", the most recent course included lectures and workshops on Scottish education, history and politics plus visits to Fife schools in and around Dunfermline, and tours to the Trossachs, Edinburgh and elswhere.  The teachers lived with families in and around Dunfermline during their stay.

Local ISP co-ordinator, Mr Robert Fraser, said: "Dunfermline is now firmly on the ISP map as our training centre in Scotland.  The teachers really appreciate it here and we are pleased to work closely with Fife Council and other bodies  to provide them with both a demanding yet rewarding time.

Over the last two years, several links have been formed beteewn schools and families here and with the teachers' home countries.  We are now bringing groups of between 10 and 50 to Dunfermline almost every month and  I am confident that our teacher visitors go home with a very positive view of Dunfermlnie and Scotland".

At a reception in the City Chambers last Thursday, Councillor William Walker, representing Fife Council, presented course completion certificates to the teachers.  Afterwards, Cllr Walker commented: "It is great that ISP teachers are now coming regularly to Dunfermline.

We keep too many of our attractions in and around the City to ourselves and the regeneration programmes now starting are futher enhancing our appeal.  Already, a number of teachers have returned with family and friends and this can only be good for our tourism and economy generally.

"Of course the links being made with teachers and pupils in our own schools can only be good and several exchanges are already in place.  In the past, Fife had many strong maritime trading connections with Scandinavian and Baltic countries and it looks like these are being restored, judging by the number of teachers now visiting from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonian and Poland!

This can only be good for two-way understanding with our European neighbours".

Cllr Walker concluded: "I am really pleased with the development of this project over the two years since I joined the new Administration in the Council.  Other councillors and staff have been supportive and very helpful in the venture which shows what can be done through innovative thinking by both ISP and Fife Council".
