Ground Breaking, West Sands, St Andrews
The West Sands Development Project took a significant step forward this week as Cllr. Donald Macgregor, Vice - Chair of Fife Council's Housing & Communities Committee "broke ground" marking the start of construction in the presence of partner organisations, including The Royal & Ancient Golf Club, The Links Trust and Housing & Community Services, Fife Council.
Work on the £900,000 project consists of a new access road, bus turning and parking facilities and upgrading of the existing car park. 1200m of existing carriageway will also be reconstructed using modern recycling processes. Landscape planting will include work to regenerate the adjoining sand dunes within a site of Special Scientific Interest. The contractor for the project is RJ McLeod with work due for completion by the end of the year. Arrangements are in place to ‘split' the construction working to accommodate major golf events such as the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship during the construction period.
Cllr. Tony Martin, Chair of Fife Council's Environment Enterprise & Transportation Committee said, "the scheme, which is part of the West Sands Masterplan, aims to restore and enhance the environment at West Sands, St Andrews by providing high quality visitor facilities, improving road and pedestrian access whilst protecting and enhancing the areas coastal dune landscape".
Cllr Donald Macgregor added, "St Andrews is rightly proud of its historical and natural heritage, famous golf links and blue flag beaches. The intention is that these improvements will aid the future development of the area as an outstanding tourism destination".
