Fife News : Fife to be a pilot Area for Directly Elected Health Boards.

Fife News : Fife to be a pilot Area for Directly Elected Health Boards.

Direct elections to health boards in Scotland are being trialled in Fife and Dumfries and Galloway next year.

Members of the public can stand in the contest, which will see councillors and elected members form a majority on health boards for the first time. Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said the move was vital to improving public accountability.

Direct elections could be rolled out, depending on the pilot's success.

The trial elections, using an all-postal vote ballot, will be held in spring 2010 and run for at least two years before being independently evaluated.

Teenagers aged 16 and 17 will also be able to vote in the elections.

SNP Deputy Leader in Fife, Cllr Douglas Chapman said "With the selection of Fife as one of the pilot board areas, the SNP has taken a further step towards the first ever direct elections to Scottish health boards. This was an SNP  manifesto commitment and I am delighted that Fife will be one of the trial health board areas.

This is designed to ensure that the views of local people about the NHS services they pay for can no longer be ignored and had this been in place during the Right for Fife campaign we would not have had the solution we have today.

The people of Dunfermline and West Fife would not have been let down so badly and had their views ignored by the previous government if a board containing members of the public had been at the heart of the decision.

Again, it's taken an SNP Scottish Government to follow through on what we all know to be the right course of action and I am sure the people of Fife will embrace the opportunity and want to help shape the future of their National Health Service."
