Fife News : Fife Council Wins Top Green Award

Fife News : Fife Council Wins Top Green Award

FIFE continues its aim to become Scotland's leading green Council as it wins a major prize at the International Green Apple Awards 2009 for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage.

Dunfermline's Monastery Street Project, a £650,000 environmental improvement plan adjacent to the Abbey, involved improving pedestrian access and incorporating new street lighting, seating and planting. It has contributed to the regeneration of the Heritage Quarter of Dunfermline, enhancing the route for visitors from the Southern Gateway, while adding to an understanding of the City's past.

Today (Monday 29 June) at Hampton Court Palace, Councillor Joe Rosiejak, Chair of City of Dunfermline Area Committee, and Gordon Sutherland from Development Services, Fife Council, will be presented with the Award by Kate O'Mara, keen environmentalist, as well as star of stage and screen.

The Monastery Street Project Award will feature in the next edition of the National Treasures Guide which is published as part of The Green Book, the world's only annual work of reference on environmental best practice.

Councillor Joe Rosiejak commented, "We are proud and delighted to have won this Award. Monastery Street is an outstanding example of excellent and dedicated craftsmanship. As a Project it has seen the creation of a safe, welcoming and pleasant public space, allowing visitors and residents to sit and enjoy the riches of Dunfermline's past".

Gordon Sutherland, Team Leader of Fife Council's Regeneration Environment Projects, added: "We are thrilled to receive this recognition. The project has enhanced the setting of the Abbey and this important public space. Dunfermline has a wealth of built heritage assets; Fife Council and Historic Scotland are presently delivering a five year improvement programme for the Conservation Area."

The Green Apple Awards Campaign is run by the Green Organisation which annually recognises, rewards and promotes projects that enhance the built environment and protect the UK's architectural heritage.
