"Change to a St Andrew's Day Holiday a Positive Step for New Scotland" says West Fife SNP Councillor William Walker "What kind of modern political leader is Alex Rowley", asks SNP Councillor William Walker, "when he prefers an archaic Queen Victoria holiday over a recognition of Scotland's own St Andrew?". "I am pleased that Fife Council's Policy, Finance and Asset Committee, the top committee in the Council, last Thursday voted to exchange the Victoria Day holiday at the beginning of June for a St Andrew's Day celebration at the end on November. However, this was not achieved before Labour Leader Mr Alex Rowley moved to oppose the plan. "Apparently, Mr Rowley prefers to defer to her former Imperial Majesty, Queen Victoria, rather than recognise our own Scottish patron saint. Of course, Mr Rowley tried to dress it up by referring to "the loss of the June local holiday". What bunkum! There is already at least one public holiday in May and the new St Andrew's Day Holiday from 2010 will break up the long period from October to Christmas. Councillor Walker continued: The Scottish Government has already taken a similar step will parliamentary and other official breaks. Like the Thanksgiving Day holiday in the USA, our St Andrew's Day holiday may provide a suitable start to our own winter festivities though to Burns' Night on 25th January and, you never know, embarrass various retailers into not promoting Christmas sales until December actually begins!" It is such a pity that Mr Rowley just cannot see progressive steps being taken in Scotland, even by his own Labour colleagues!"
Councillor Walker concluded: "I know that the St Andrew's Day holiday will tie in well with various projects already pursued in a number of schools in my ward. It is also significant that this decision was taken in "Scottish Homecoming Year", a project actually initiated under the previous Labour-led Administration at Holyrood.
