Safer Internet Day Media Opportunity

Hampshire Constabulary is backing Safer Internet Day on February 7, 2012, by launching its own Personal Internet and Cyber Safety (PICS) presentation for schools across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Led by the force's Public Protection Department, the presentation has been developed by Whitehill Police Community Support Officers John Terry and Jim Leggat.

The two PCSOs have taken national advice from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre and developed interactive presentations for both primary and secondary school pupils that are both educational and engaging.

The presentation has already been successfully trialled at a number of schools in the north of Hampshire - with positive feedback received from students, teachers and parents - and is currently under consideration to be rolled out as a force-wide initiative in 2012.

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an annual European Union event to promote the safe and responsible use of technology among children and young people. The focus of SID 2012 is "Connecting Generations", which aims to encourage families to explore online technologies together.

In order to showcase the PICS presentation to media across the two counties, Churcher's College in Petersfield has agreed to host a demonstration session on Tuesday, February 7, between 10am and 1pm.

On the day, there will be opportunities for the media to interview:

  • Detective Inspector John Geden, from Hampshire Constabulary's Child Abuse Investigation Unit.
  • Whitehill PCSOs John Terry and Jim Leggat.
  • Teacher Sophie Schofield from Churcher's College.
  • Additional Churcher's College teachers who are parents of students at the college.
  • Churcher's College pupils who have viewed the PICS presentation.

In addition to this, PS Nick Bennett will be available for telephone interviews between 10am and 1pm on February 7.

To confirm attendance at Churcher's College or to arrange a telephone interview, call Jonathan Lee, Hampshire Constabulary corporate communications officer, on 01962 871075 by 3pm on Monday, February 6.
