Recognised for excellence
DUNDEE City Council's social work department has become the first in Scotland to achieve recognition from a prestigious European business excellence group.
Members of the council's social work and health committee will be told that the department was recently presented with a Recognised for Excellence bronze award by European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM).
Committee convener Jim Barrie said: "This is a terrific achievement that did not take place overnight, but is the result of a number of years of consistently hard work by members of staff throughout the social work department.
"The Scottish Awards for Business Excellence are widely regarded as the most rigorous and prestigious accolades of their type in the country and to be selected as one of only eight organisations in the whole of Scotland with such recognition from EFQM indicates just how strongly focussed we are on bringing about real benefits to the people of Dundee."
A 45-page report in support was submitted to EFQM earlier this year and the department was visited by two of the group's assessors who met with members of staff and looked at documents and other paperwork before arriving at their decision.
Implementing the committed to excellence programme helps organisations of any size and in any line of business to demonstrate that they are taking continuous improvement seriously by understanding the current level of performance and establishing ways of getting better.
The social work and health committee meets on Wednesday (July 1).
