The money confiscated from criminals using Proceeds of Crime legislation exceeded £1million for the first quarter of the 2010 - 2011 financial year.
Since the start of April the National Casework Division of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has secured Confiscation Orders totalling £1,013,283 from 16 individuals who had been convicted of offences ranging from benefit fraud to misuse of drugs.
One case, Operation Lockdown, a surveillance led operation into the large scale import and distribution of class A controlled drugs, resulted in over £515,000 being confiscated.
Lesley Thomson, Area Procurator Fiscal for Glasgow, and the COPFS POCA Champion said:
"The Proceeds of Crime legislation plays a significant role in disrupting both individual and serious and organised crime in Scotland. The £1,013,283 recovered has been taken from those convicted of crimes and allows us to restrict their future livelihoods in addition to any other sentence the court has imposed.
"This is in addition to the £6.6million which was recovered earlier in the year from Anatoly Kazachkov in a civil case handled by colleagues in the Civil Recovery Unit.
"Although these figures represent a good start to this financial year we will not be complacent and will continue to work hard, utilising the full powers available within the Proceeds of Crime legislation, to ensure that crime does not pay."
Assistant Chief Constable Angela Wilson, ACPOS POCA Champion added:
"These figures are extremely encouraging and reflect the hard work of the police and our criminal justice partners. Throughout Scotland we are working hard to protect communities from the harm caused by organised crime. The loss of their money, assets and lifestyle hits criminals where it hurts, providing a public demonstration that crime does not pay.
"We will continue to work closely with COPFS and other partner agencies to disrupt criminal activity, dismantle criminal groups and eradicate organised crime from our communities."
