Still time to share top tips

There's still time for residents to share their top tips for reusing rubbish as part of a Derbyshire County Council campaign to reduce waste. The county council launched it's ‘We're not wasters' campaign to encourage people to do their bit to help reduce, reuse and recycle more of the county's rubbish.

And it has 50 £10 High Street gift vouchers to give away to people who come up with top ideas for making the most of unwanted items.

The best ideas will be published on the county council's website for other people to use.

Councillor John Allsop, Derbyshire County Council's cabinet member for Technology and Recycling, said: "We recycle and compost around 41% of household rubbish in Derbyshire. That's great - but we need to do much more.
"It means cutting the amount of waste going to landfill by recycling and reusing more and wasting less.
"We also need to build a treatment centre to deal with rubbish we can't recycle."

Dealing with the county's rubbish costs Derbyshire County Council £20 million a year.

In 2008/09, residents produced 361,000 tonnes of household rubbish in Derbyshire (excluding Derby City).

Residents recycled and composted more than 148,000 tonnes (41 per cent) and 213,000 tonnes were sent to landfill.

* For more information about the competition visit www.derbyshire.gov.uk/toptips (opens in a new window). Closing date 9 May 2010.
