More to benefit as domestic abuse helpine times extended

People affected by domestic abuse will have more opportunity to ring a confidential helpline when the service's hours are increased later this week.

Derbyshire County Council is funding the extra hours for the Derbyshire Domestic Abuse Helpline - 0800 019 8668 - which has been running for two years.

In the past the helpline has been answered by a trained counsellor between office hours only.

The extra hours when a trained person will now answer the helpline are:

  • from 6pm to midnight every night, and
  • until 1am on Friday nights
• until 2am on Saturday nights.

When the helpline is not staffed an answerphone will direct people to alternative help or ask them to leave a message and ask to be called back.

The helpline is for victims of domestic abuse as well as people in fear of domestic abuse. Victims can be people whose lives are being tightly controlled or monitored by someone else, whether or not violence has actually happened or is feared.

The helpline can also be used by relatives, friends, neighbours and work colleagues.

It is hoped that the helpline will also help prevent domestic abuse happening in the first place and people are urged to call for support and advice as soon as any abuse is feared.

Anyone who is worried about their immediate personal safety should call the police on 999.

There is a wide range of support for victims and potential victims of domestic abuse including safe houses and refuges for men and women, financial and legal help and courses and support for people to help them take back control of their lives.

There is also help for people who abuse others but want to stop.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Care Councillor Charles Jones said: "The helpline can provide vital support and advice to people who are victims of domestic abuse or who are living in fear of it.

"It was a concern that people were put off from leaving a message on the out-of-hours answerphone for fear of being called back when the abuser was there.

"This gives people far more opportunity to call and speak to someone in person and get the help and support they need."
