Council urges Derbyshire to turn off for Earth Hour

Residents across Derbyshire are being urged to join Derbyshire County Council and millions of people around the globe and flick off the switch for Earth Hour this month.
Derbyshire County Council is backing the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) campaign to get a billion people to switch their lights off for an hour and show how much they care about the effects of climate change.

The council will be turning off the floodlights at its headquarters in County Hall in Matlock to show support for Earth Hour.

The event will be held from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday March 27.

Climate change is an important talking point and Earth Hour aims to raise awareness of the issues and encourage people to take positive action to show they care.

Councillor John Allsop, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Technology said: "Climate change affects us all and we all have a role to play to help minimise the effects.

"By turning out our flood lights for an hour, we can all show our support and make an international statement - we care about climate change and urgent action is needed now."

In 2005 Derbyshire County Council signed up to the Carbon Trust's local authority carbon management programme to show it's commitment to help prevent climate change.

Visit www.earthhour.wwf.org.uk (opens in a new window) for more ideas on how you can join in and show your support.

There are plenty of ideas for things that local communities could organise for themselves, such as turning off their own lights, organising a local walk by candlelight or even holding a candlelit community party.
