Review of taxi licences

Cornwall Council is reviewing its current policies that limit the number of taxi licences issued in some areas in Cornwall.

Cornwall has six taxi licensing zones and these are based on the boundaries of the areas of the former District and Borough Councils that were abolished when Cornwall Council was created.

The Council previously consulted on the licensing zones and it was decided to keep these rather than amalgamate them. This was only the first stage in reviewing the licensing of taxis and private hire vehicles in Cornwall.

The Council is now consulting further to seek views on a policy, which is used in three of the six zones, that limits the number of taxi licences issued to match demand in each zone. The three zones that operate this policy are Penwith, Carrick and Restormel.

There are various views for and against this policy and ultimately we need to demonstrate that it benefits the consumer to limit the issue of licences in this way.
