Penzance and Newlyn residents have been feeding their ideas into a Cornwall Council project which will examine future employment and business opportunities in the area.
The first of a series of design and consultation sessions with the local community took place on Wednesday 10 March at The Queens Hotel, Penzance.
Run by the planning and design team from AECOM who are leading the project on behalf of Cornwall Council, the sessions brought together key community representatives from local businesses, town and parish councils, community and voluntary groups, local interest groups and representatives from the heritage, culture and environmental sectors, so they could contribute their thoughts and suggestions to this exciting work.
The groups took part in a number of interactive activities which look at the opportunities for Penzance and Newlyn to play a key economic role in west Cornwall. This includes its environment and landscape, what attracts visitors to the area and how to increase numbers, looking at the area's arts, culture and identity, transport links, leisure and entertainment opportunities as well as local businesses and jobs.
Cornwall Councillor Carolyn Rule, who has responsibility for economy and regeneration said: "We really want the people of Penzance and Newlyn to be involved in developing its future. The feedback from this design and consultation session will be invaluable as we develop the framework plan. Future sessions are planned as the project progresses and I would urge people to come along and get involved."
The day was attended by over 100 local people generating a huge wave of positive energy and enthusiasm which we can now build on generating ideas and opinions on the local economy and how it could be developed in the future.
This design and consultation session forms part of a Cornwall Council project which will examine future employment and business opportunities in Penzance and Newlyn. The project needs local residents to feed in their ideas and comments to ensure they benefit fully from any future investment.
The European funding programme Convergence identified Penzance and Newlyn as an area with the potential to play a key economic role in west Cornwall and has provided funding for the project. The project will examine ways to capitalise on any future funding opportunities, looking at the area as a whole, rather than at individual sites in isolation.
