Prestigious silver CHEFS award for The Haven Cafe in Crackington Haven
The Haven Cafe in Crackington Haven has been presented with a Silver CHEFS award.
Cornwall Healthier Eating and Food Safety (CHEFS) Awards are presented to Cornish food businesses which promote healthier food choices and have high standards of hygiene and staff training. CHEFS awards are presented by Cornwall Council's food safety officers working in partnership with Eatsome/NHS Health Promotion Service, Change 4 Life and the Council's trading standards officers.
Nick Cooper of the Haven Café said of the Award: "This isn't about losing any of the values that have made the Haven Cafe the success it is today, it's about providing our customers with a choice all year round about the food they eat and the lifestyle they wish to follow. We'd like to think we're an example to other similar businesses throughout the county."
To achieve a Silver Award, food establishments must satisfy Cornwall Council food inspectors that they not only offer healthier dishes but, through preferential pricing, that they actively encourage customers to choose them. Award winners should where possible use local produce and meet the highest standards of cleanliness and food hygiene practices, including the use of a documented food safety management system.
Customers will have a guarantee that a percentage of the items on the menu are sourced locally. However, businesses are not expected to ensure that every dish served or item sold meets all the criteria - it's about choice.
Lance Kennedy, Cornwall Council's Cabinet member for community safety and neighbourhoods, said: "It's great to see the Haven Café join the ranks of the CHEFS Award winners. Local produce and healthy recipes enhance the delicious array of dishes available in our restaurants, and customers know they can expect the highest standards of food hygiene from our Award winners."
A detailed information pack for businesses about the CHEFS Award scheme, which includes tips on using healthier ingredients and local produce, modifying recipes to cut down the amount of fat, sugar and salt, and advice about the different food safety requirements required to achieve the three levels of award, is available by telephoning 0300 1234 212 or emailing envhealthandlicensing@cornwall.gov.uk.
