Swanwick Memorial Hall saved from closure
Chesterfield Borough Council has agreed to a five year lease that secures the continued use of the Swanwick Memorial Hall in Old Whittington. The Hall was under threat of closure because of rising maintenance costs and a lack of income from under use of the facility.
A five year agreement has now been made with national charity MacIntyre to lease the Hall for their work in the local area and to promote the facility as a community resource. Under the agreement, MacIntyre will carry out essential improvement work, after consulting with local residents.
Cllr Ray Russell, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: "This is a real win win situation for everybody involved. We've taken on board what the local community wanted and worked with MacIntyre to secure a positive outcome for their business needs whilst at the same time keeping the Hall as a local community resource with the added benefit of reducing the level of subsidy from Chesterfield Borough Council tax payers."
Maddie Welton Chair of Save our Swanwick Action Group, which campaigned to stop the closure of the Hall said: "We're really pleased with this decision as not only does it keep the Hall open but it will become a much improved facility that we can start to use again for local community events."
Natalie Macpherson from MacIntyre said: "Swanwick Hall is in a great location for our clients and we're looking forward to working with the local community and to making the necessary improvements to the Hall for the benefit of our clients and for local people."
