Film Reviews - November

Film Reviews - November

November is finally here and the two big releases that I've been looking forward to this month are 2012 and New Moon.
Just hope that they live up to expectations.

In the mean time here are my opinions of this months movies as they come out.

Michael Jackson - This Is It.
01/11/09
Michael Jackson's This Is It
I have never exactly been a Michael Jackson Fan but as a DJ I do appreciate his music from the 70's right through to his solo carreer. This film shows rehearsel footage from "the show that never was" shortly before his untimely death.
What is apparent all the way through the film is, although he had some strange outlooks on life, he loved his music and was a perfectionist when it came to performing.
This film is a must for Jackson fans everywhere and even for people who just enjoyed his music.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where machines have destroyed all humans this novel tale tells a story of strange little hand made toys brought to life by a scientist before he dies.
It's up to these little creatures to take on the mighty machines and keep humanity alive.

This is a strange little story - but then again anything involving Tim Burton is never ordinary - but compelling to watch to the end. Although this would probably not be everyones choice of movie to go and see i would recommend you don't miss it.

Jennifers Body
Poster
When high school beauty Jennifer gets taken over by a demon she becomes obsessed with killing boys and eating their innards.
Great teen horror which is not afraid to take the mickey out of itself as well as some of the old horror stereotype scenes.
Megan Fox stars as the Hottie Demon Monster from Hell.
Great soundtrack and a great comedy horror.

A Christmas Carol
13/11/09
A Christmas Carol 3D
The Charles Dickens novel is given a modern makeover and is produced in real time animation and in 3D.
The snow effects are excellent as you are sitting in your seats and you really believe it is snowing all around you.
Scrooge is portayed by Jim Carrey and there's plenty of other stars around too.
By now every-one knows the stroy so there's no real surprises - apart from the snow the 3D is average and maybe this one should have been released a little closer to xmas.
Definately seems to be the best looking choice of the Xmas films due to be released shortly.

Harry Brown
15/11/09

Harry Brown
Michael Caine stars as Harry Brown, a fed up old pensioner who decides to take on the youth gangs terrorising the neighbourhood.
Although this starts off a little slow the pace picks up once Harry starts getting his own back on the rampaging teenagers. If you liked Gran Torino starring Clint Eastwood, earlier in the year, then you're gonna love this one too.

2012
16/11/09
2012
The big special effects movie of the Autumn is here. From the same director of The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 brings you plenty of explosions, tumbling buildings and tsunami's galore in this epic "end of the world" movie.
If you are a special effects fan then you're gonna have a field day but apart from that and a little dark humour there's not a lot else to this.
Expect lots of cheesy "disaster" type scenario's that you've seen time and time before in other disater movies like Poseidon Adventure etc etc.
Despite all the cheese it is good enough though to hold you in your seat for the 2 and a half hrs running time.
One to definately not miss.

New Moon
23/11/09
The Twilight Saga - New Moon
The Twilight story continues with Bella Swan and her vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen.
After an unfortunate accident on her birthday Edward decides that his life as a vampire is too dangerous for Bella and he breaks up with her and leaves. This leaves Bella unprotected against old enemies and the fact that werewolves seem to be showing up everywhere too. But what are the intentions of the werewolves ?
This second film in the series is very true to the book in the fact that not a lot actually happens. It still is a great film/story to watch and the teenage girls will love the half naked young men showing their rippling muscular bodies on the screen throughout the film.
Books 3 & 4 stories soon heat up the action so looking forward to the next couple of films.

The Men Who Stare At Goats
25/11/09

The Men Who Stare At Goats
I would like to say something about this film but unfortunately it was that dis-interesting that I actually slept through most of it.
The bits I did see were just not funny and I just did not care about any of the characters on screen.
This is one of those cases where I am glad I have a cineworld card otherwise it would have been £8 (or whatever the current price is) down the drain. As it was I just wasted an hour and a half of my time instead.
If you want a real good laugh go see Paranormal Activity instead.

Paranormal Activity
25/11/09
Paranormal Activity
If you want a real good laugh take your girlfriend along to this one and hope you get a young group of teenagers sitting in front of you.
The film is all about a couple who buy a video camera to capture paranormal acticity happening around them whilst they sleep.
The whole story is told through the lens of the video camera they have purchased.
Paranormal activity is captured during the filming freaking out the two on screen characters. As the activity increases throughout the film the reaction of the audience ( particularly the girls ) is just fantastic.
I have never heard so much audience anticipation and reactions since The Exorcist.

The young teenage lad sitting in front of me was also terrified and i really thought his chair was going to break and collapse on me in the final part of the film when he physically jumped & shrank back from the screen.
Teenage girls were visibly shaken when leaving the cinema, one was shaking so much she could hardly hold her drink.

I was more interested in the reactions of everyone around me and would have found the film mildly interesting otherwise.
Still worth going to see though.
