Court conviction for litter offender
Chesterfield Borough Council has won a case against Ms Kathleen Shipley, aged 63, of High Pavement, Belper, for dropping a cigarette end in Chesterfield Market Place on 15th October last year. The case was heard at Chesterfield Magistrate's Court on 3rd February.
A Council enforcement officer witnessed the cigarette being dropped by Ms Shipely who argued the point in court. However the Magistrates accepted what the Council officer had witnessed and gave Ms Shipley a conditional discharge and ordered her to pay costs of £130.
The Council, who recently launched their "Size Does Matter" campaign to focus attention on cigarette ends and chewing gum, issue fixed penalty notices of £50 to anyone caught littering in the Borough.
