Come on CHESTERFIELD! Sport Relief 2010 has arrived

Come on CHESTERFIELD! Sport Relief 2010 has arrived

Sport Relief is back - and it's coming to Chesterfield's Queen's Park. The town is set to host one of Sainsbury's Sport Relief Miles on Sunday 21st March, and needs local people to show their support by entering now at www.sportrelief.com. The one mile sets off at 10.30am, 11.00am, 11.30am and 12.00noon from the cricket pavilion, Queen's Park. The three and six miles both set off at 10.30am from set points around the park.

The Sport Relief Weekend is taking place from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st March and it'll be three whole days of energy, entertainment and events to help the nation rise to the challenge!

Cllr David Stone, Lead member for Safe, Healthy and Active Communities said: "The Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile in Queen's Park is here and it's your time to shine.  From teeny-tots with their mums and dads, to super sprinters up against the clock there's something for everyone on the big day - whether you do one, three or six miles.  Best of all, the money you raise by getting sponsored will be used to transform lives forever.  So come on Chesterfield, rise to the challenge!"

Hundreds of thousands of people across the country will rise to the challenge at the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile - and have a great time too - whether they do one, three or six miles.  Comic Relief will spend the money raised through sponsorship helping poor and vulnerable people both here in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.

A Sports Relief spokesperson said: "Participation in the East Midlands remains above the national average, but we need to continue the drive both to get the right sporting opportunities in place, and to change people's sporting behaviours.

"Six months into a four-year funding period, we're delighted that sports such as athletics and cycling are delivering substantial growth. However, we do recognise the challenges around participation among women and disabled people, as well as in some individual sports.

We're absolutely committed to working with sport to improve our understanding of specific barriers to growth in these areas and taking steps to address them."

To support with your training for the Sports Relief Mile, Jog Derbyshire in partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council, is launching three new jogging groups for beginners and intermediate joggers based at the Healthy Living Centre and Queen's Park Sports Centre. Anyone interested in attending should contact the Healthy Living Centre on 01246 345666, Queen's Park Sports Centre on 01246 345555 or go to www.activederbyshire.co.uk/jog.
