Chesterfield. A good place to live says national report.
Over four out of five local residents think that Chesterfield is a good place to live. The figure is taken from a new website, produced by the Audit Commission (www.oneplace.direct.gov.uk ), that looks at how local public services are performing in England, if they provide value for money and where they could improve.
The report states that Chesterfield provides good opportunities for young people, the streets are clean, people like the parks and open spaces and enjoy the theatre, concert hall and museums. There are high levels of satisfaction with services related to the environment including recycling and bin collections.
Chesterfield Borough Council is effective in identifying priority services that are important to local people and does well in getting extra funding to support these priorities. The Council is weathering the recession and boosting the economy as well as increasing tourism and helping residents in deprived areas to find work. It is also rated as working well with partners in tackling crime and disorder and anti-social behaviour.
The report also picks up on the financial challenges faced by the Council because of the unexpected shortfall in central government funding for free bus travel but points out that it is taking positive action to identify savings while protecting services. The Council is identified as an example of notable practice for its financial management arrangements.
Cllr Ray Russell, Leader at Chesterfield Borough Council said: "There are many positive points for Chesterfield in this report which is a new way of measuring our performance alongside those of partners such as the police, fire and health services and the county council."
"There are also some areas that are highlighted for improvement including further enhancing the quality of council homes, tackling alchohol related crime and ensuring easier access to Council services.
"These are already covered in our plans for the coming year and, when taken alongside the positive messages, re-affirm our commitment to delivering quality services that meet the needs and aspirations of our residents and the business community."
