The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the nation's heart charity, saving lives through pioneering research, patient care and vital information. We are totally committed to preventing people's lives being devastated by heart disease.

BHF's London appeal
We urgently need £300,000 to provide defibrillators across London. The BHF has already contributed £200,000 but we desperately need the help of the public to raise the remaining £100,000, to place these in the areas of greatest need.

BHF are working with the London Ambulance Service to save more lives across London by placing defi brillators at some of the busiest and most stressed locations in London - the Tube stations! Millions of people use or pass by these locations daily and we desperately need to provide this vital link in the chain of survival for people
suffering a cardiac arrest in or near them.

In addition, we are both working to train teams to use a defi brillator, who can be directed to a person whose heart has stopped, in those vital few minutes before an ambulance can arrive. This could literally mean the difference between life and death!

Why are defibrillators so important?
A defi brillator could save your life as it is used to shock a person's heart when they suffer a cardiac arrest.

A cardiac arrest occurs when a person's heart stops.
Someone in cardiac arrest will lose consciousness, will not be breathing and will have no signs of circulation.

London Ambulance Service Medical Director, Dr Fionna Moore said: "With a cardiac arrest every second counts in the delivery of fi rst aid. When a person's heart stops there is limited time in which to deliver a shock, and after that time has passed there is little chance of survival. With more defi brillators in
public places and more people trained to use them even more lives can be saved."

In 2006/07 the London Ambulance Service received over 113,000 calls from patients, reporting potential cardiac or chest pain related problems.

Organise an event
You can support us at work, school, university, at your local club or even with friends. It's often easier to fundraise with friends rather than on your own. Tell your family, friends, your local church, group or association about the appeal to see if they can help you, or are willing to support the appeal in some way.
