Youths spark firearms alert
Two 17-year-olds sparked a full-scale police firearms response after pointing a weapon out of a flat window in Earl Street, Hastings.
Police were alerted by a member of the public who had seen a handgun being pointed and fired out of the window shortly before 7pm on Sunday (December 27). A response team from Sussex Police's Tactical Firearms Unit entered the flat, arrested the two youths and recovered a BB gun. They were interviewed under suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm in a public place and bailed until February 12.
Hastings district police commander, Ch Insp Mark Ling, said: "While on this occasion it was quickly established that a BB gun was involved, these weapons are manufactured in such a way that even our trained police firearms officers cannot always tell them apart from the real thing without close examination. This means that anyone carrying or using one of these weapons in public could easily find themselves confronted by armed police officers. This is something we obviously do not want to happen as it increases the risks for all involved.
"All soft airguns without exception are imitation firearms under the Firearms Act 1968. That means that anyone found in possession of a BB gun in a public place is likely to find themselves being arrested and could be subject to a fine of £5000, six months' imprisonment or both. BB guns must not be carried on show or be used in public."
