Take care on the roads this Christmas

While the first blast of winter seems to be easing a little, Sussex Police are reminding drivers to remain alert to poor driving conditions as Christmas approaches.

Ch Insp Di Roskilly, from Sussex Police's Road Policing Unit, said: "Low morning sun coupled with a windscreen that you cannot see through properly is potentially extremely dangerous. Ensure that you thoroughly demist the windscreen and do not move off until all of your windows and mirrors are fully clear.

"If you are making your journey by cycle, bike or on foot, please also wear something highly visible. If visibility suddenly deteriorates it's vital that you're easier to see by all road users. Motorists should be aware that pavement conditions continue to be very slippery in places and therefore pedestrians are often walking in the road as a result."

She added: "Do not assume that because one part of the road looks clear of snow and ice, this will be the case around the next bend. Plan your route and leave more time for your journey. Drive slowly and carefully to take account of the icy conditions, always leave a good distance between your car and any vehicles in front of you. Road users in Sussex can all play a crucial part in achieving our aim of reduced casualties and fatalities on the roads of the county, simply by taking sensible and logical precautions in these difficult travelling conditions."

Neil Hopkins, communications manager for the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) said: "We advise that motorists travel with blankets, food and a flask of hot drink in case of a breakdown or emergency. Ensure you have a mobile phone with you and it is fully charged, particularly if you are making a longer journey.

"Make sure your screen wash is topped up, isn't frozen and check that windscreen wipers and tyres are in good condition."
