Eastbourne: Preparations for 999 Day in full swing

Representatives from local emergency services were out in force on Sunday as preparations move up a gear for Eastbourne's forthcoming 999 display.

The two-day extravaganza, held on the Western Lawns and Wish Tower slopes on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July, attracts over 30,000 visitors each year.

Now in its twenty-second year, the event sees over fifteen different emergency services join together to demonstrate their work to the public. Organised by Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, South East Coast Ambulance Service, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), this year there will also be representatives from voluntary search and rescue teams along with contingents from the French National Gendarmerie and the Royal Navy present.

Visitors will get the chance to meet members of the emergency services and get an up-close look at 999 response vehicles. Arena attractions this year include a simulated cliff rescue, police and fire dogs, a chip pan fire and mock road crash scenes, as well as fly overs from the Police, Air Ambulance and Coastguard helicopters.

Back by popular demand, the Royal Navy Diving Unit will provide a 18,000 litre dive tank and, together with Sussex Police Underwater Search Unit, divers will be giving underwater action displays.

Inspector Kaj Bartlett, who is involved in organising the event, said: "We believe this is a wonderful opportunity for people to see what the emergency services do, whilst learning some very valuable safety messages."
