East Sussex Police Chief says ‘Have fun and stay safe this Christmas'
Police in East Sussex are reminding revellers to consume alcohol safely over the festive period, to resonate key messages from the Home Office ‘Safe, Sensible, Social' National Alcohol Strategy.
East Sussex Downs & Weald PCT reports that there have been 10,270 alcohol-related hospital admissions across East Sussex this year, which amounts to 28 alcohol-related admissions a day, up 5% from last year.
"In essence many of these are ‘alcohol overdoses' which can often lead to tragic events," said Chief Superintendent Robin Smith.
"In the last three years, drink-driving has been the cause of over 50% of fatal collisions in Sussex during the months of December and January. Incredibly, drivers aged 24 and under were involved in over a third of all injury collisions. 88% of drink drivers were male and almost 40% of fatal and serious injury collisions occurred at weekends, particularly in the early hours of Sunday morning. The same rules and laws apply at Christmas as the rest of the year. It is essential that people remember this before making a life changing mistake.
"I have arranged for extra licensing patrols for this busy time of year in order to ensure that revellers make it home safely after social nights out. Injury violent crime is down across East Sussex by 8.5% but at this time of peak policing demand, we are working extra hard to ensure that people can celebrate in safety.
