Chichester - Fire at convent being treated as suspicious
DETECTIVES in Chichester are appealing for witnesses and information following a fire at a former convent in Hunston, near Chichester, on Sunday (June 28th).
Police were called to the blaze at 8.15pm together with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service when flames were spotted coming from the roof. Although the cause has yet to be established, it is being treated as suspicious.
Detective Inspector Jim McKnight, from Chichester CID, said: "At this time there is no other real explanation other than arson, and we are not ruling out the possibility that this fire is linked to a series of others which have taken place in and around the Chichester city centre area during the last few weeks.
"These fires have included bins, skips, empty buildings and vehicles. We are using various tactics to tackle this problem and are working closely with the fire service and Chichester District Council to prevent future fires and identify those responsible for causing them.
"Fortunately the convent was empty at the time so no-one was hurt. However, had the fire service not acted as quickly as it did the fire and damage caused would have been a lot worse.
"We would like to hear from any member of the public who saw anything suspicious in the area of the convent on Sunday afternoon and evening, no matter how insignificant they think it might be. In addition we would like to hear from anyone who has information relating to the recent spate of fires in the city centre area."
To encourage anyone with information to come forward a £500 reward is being offered to anyone who can provide information that leads to an arrest and conviction of a person in connection with the fires. Anyone who can help is asked to contact police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 1688 of June 28th.
