Football supporters in Brighton continue to enjoy a reputation for good behaviour.
National statistics for football related arrests and banning orders during season 2008/9 were released by the Home Office today, Tuesday 22 December. They show that just eight people who attended Brighton and Hove Albion matches were arrested. Of these, two were at home matches and six were at away games. Of the eight arrests, six were for public order offences. One was for pitch incursion and one was for an alcohol-related offence. This is a reduction from 2007/08 when there were 10 arrests.
Of the eight arrests last season Sussex Police successfully obtained a football banning order on one of the individuals.
PC Darren Balkham, Sussex Police football liaison officer said; "The excellent partnership working between Brighton and Hove Albion and Sussex Police, together with the self policing of the supporters through our links with the supporters club, continue to make Withdean a family friendly environment in which to watch football.
Neither the club nor Sussex Police are complacent and will continue to take positive action if individuals want to use the name of Brighton for their criminal behaviour. Anyone who does so faces the prospect of missing seeing Brighton start their new era at the community stadium in Falmer. No real fan would want to miss that."
