July in Brent is all about the shared language of dance as people dust off their dancing shoes and boogie, ballet or bop their way through summer.
Brent Dance Month 2009 will be launched at Brent Respect Festival on Sunday 5 July in the Momentum Dance tent with a whole host of demonstrations and workshops to provide tasters for the variety of the month long programme.
One of the featured groups, Hypnotick, won this year's British Street Dance Championship, the young dancers absolutely mesmerising the jury.
The group is a project from non-profit organisation Active Aspirations. In the words of Director,Tekla Galova, and lead choreographer Taz Sanusi: "The aim of this group is to get together young people from all walks of life and show that there can be no boundaries for people to work together and create something positive".
The project started last year with only two dancers and managed to build to a group of 20 with origins from around the world. Hypnotick is a multicultural group that represents the spirit of today's London.
Those wanting to join in the dance taster sessions can go on a 1pm to 8pm journey from African, through Salsa, to Merengue, and much more, including French social dancing to the sound of accordions, fiddles, hurdy gurdy and bagpipes.
It does not stop there; during the rest of the month people can rediscover their inner child by picking up a hoop and dancing themselves silly during a hoop dance. Or if they like to waltz, tango, jazz and rumba they can try out these styles to some funky Bollywood beats. The idea is to be inspired and get into dance.
Brent libraries are hosting a series of talks, a chance to listen and learn about different dance styles, including Mexican, Cuban salsa and South Asian dance. People can also borrow a wide selection of dance-related books, DVDs and CDs.
Brent Dance Month (BDM) is part of a larger project called Momentum to develop dance across West London.
"We hope that as many residents as possible get involved and develop a passion for dancing. Whether you're an absolute beginner who's never set foot on a dance floor, or a seasoned disco diva, there'll be something to suit you," said Brent Council Lead Member for Environment and Culture Cllr. Irwin Van Colle.
To get more information on all the dance activity happening in Brent throughout July people can pick up a BDM calendar from their local library or One Stop Shop, or visit www.brent.gov.uk/festivals and www.momentumlondon.info
