Brent’s gifted kids unite to Let London Live

The council's most gifted and talented youngsters will be joining students from other west London boroughs to take part in a conference on London's future on Monday, 29 April at the Wembley Plaza Hotel.

The Let London Live - Reclaiming Our Future event will see students from six Brent schools working alongside contemporaries from schools in Hounslow and Hillingdon to develop a manifesto for improvement which they will then present to councillors in their prospective boroughs.

To help them in their task, the delegates will listen to presentations from experts in a wide variety of fields, from climate change and carbon footprints to healthy lifestyles and safer streets - all with a view to improving their local communities and London as a whole.

Each student has been invited along by the West London Gifted and Talented Partnership because they have been recognised by their schools as being "tomorrow's leaders", with the potential to lead real change in their local areas.

As "agents of change", the young people, who are aged between 14 and 16 years old will have to take part in a series of workshops on the day that address the following four themes of their manifesto for local change:

  • Fit for the 21st Century - promoting healthy lifestyles
  • How big is your footprint? - promoting sustainable transport
  • A cool future - tackling climate change
  • Dancing in the streets - making streets and open spaces safer for everyone

Let London Live - Reclaiming Our Future is the second youth conference organised by the West London Gifted and Talented Partnership, after the success of the first event on the future of schools and education.

Brent's Gifted and Talented co-ordinator, Sharon Rhodes, says;

"If last year's event is anything to go by, I'm really expecting great things this time around.  The students worked really hard and there were some great suggestions and ideas then and it was wonderful to see them working so well with other children from other schools and boroughs.

"These young people really are the leaders and decision makers of the future so events like this are so important to harness and encourage the enthusiasm and interest they have for their local communities and the world around them."

The Let London Live youth conference takes place on Monday, 29 June from 9.30am to 3.30pm at the Wembley Plaza Hotel.
