Bonfire costs businessman £8,000
A businessman has been fined £8,000, and ordered to pay £1,688 in costs, after workmen started a fierce bonfire which caused a serious smoke-pollution incident, behind a shop they were refurbishing.
Officers from Brent Council's Environmental Health service discovered the workmen unlawfully burning waste materials and rubbish behind 271 Kilburn High Road, NW6, on 1 March this year.
The fire was over two metres wide and causing a large plume of foul-smelling smoke.
The officers ordered the fire extinguished but despite using two fire extinguishers and buckets of water, it would not die down until worried neighbours called the firebrigade.
The workers had been burning items such as wire cabling, MDF board, cloth and other material.
Harry Rahamim of Tithe Walk, Mill Hill, NW7, (DOB 18/10/52) told council officers at the scene that he was burning the waste to prevent rats on the property.
Mr Rahamim failed to attend Brent Magistrates on 2 October to answer the charge of unlawful disposal of waste contrary to the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Magistrates found him guilty in his absence.
David Thrale, Brent Council's Director of Environmental Health, said: "The unlawful burning of waste from a business causes pollution and stops nearby residents and businesses from being able to carry out their normal lawful activities.
"In this day and age, it is totally unacceptable for anyone to dispose of waste in this manner and I am pleased that the magistrates imposed a stiff penalty.
"I hope that this acts as a deterrent to anyone else tempted to dispose of waste in this way. If anyone becomes aware of such an incident in future, please report it to us."
