A new £680,000 children's centre officially opens in the grounds of Alperton Community School on 3 November.
Many of the 600 parents and carers who are already on the popular centre's books will join the Mayor of Brent for a packed day of celebrations featuring everything from arts and crafts and face painting, to steel pans and dancing.
A raffle will offer the chance to win prizes donated by Marcia Hurley, Customer Service Manager for John Lewis at Brent Cross; Alperton supermarket, J Sainsbury; and David Lloyd Gym, Sudbury Hill.
The head teacher of Alperton Community School, Maggie Rafee, will make an opening speech and watch year-ten Harrow pupil Monet Lewin perform a song before an official 'cake cutting' ceremony to mark the centre's opening. Lunch is being kindly provided for free from Nando's in Wembley.
Alperton Children's Centre, which started offering services in January 2008, from Safe Start Foundation, Alperton, moved into its newly built centre on 14 April this year. The centre runs family support classes, speech and language therapy, a Citizens Advice Bureau, pop in and play sessions, computer classes, childcare courses, storytelling, a father's group, a crèche, a baby clinic, play garden and training rooms.
There are also plans to introduce a toy library service, toddler gymnastics and English lessons.
Head of centre, Ian Roberts, says: "We are delighted by the huge following we have already built up in such a short space of time. New faces are always welcome and we are very keen to hear from parents and carers who have suggestions about what we could offer in the future.
"It's a very friendly centre and the staff get great satisfaction from seeing children and parents learn and have fun together."
Andrea Williams, who uses the centre with her 18-month-old son Amani, says: "The centre has facilities that I can't provide at home and it gives my son a chance to mix with other children his own age. I feel I have become a better parent because I am more aware of how Amani is able to learn through play. The staff are friendly, sincere, informative and passionate about children's development and new parents are always made to feel very welcome."
Successful children's centres are already up and running in Wembley, Alperton, Willesden, Neasden and Stonebridge. A further community and children's centre is due to open on the St Raphael's estate later this year. Services offered at centres are based on local need and parental choice.
