The search has been narrowed down to a rich Tudor known as John Winchcombe II, a clothier and hugely wealthy M.P. who bought large amounts of land and houses, just like in the story. During his lifetime he paid $4000 to Henry VIII, to whom he bears a striking resemblance to.
