Royal Voluntary Service needs your help

Volunteers needed to help older people in Birmingham

More volunteers are needed for the exciting new Home & Well project, launching on January 28th, to provide older people being discharged from hospital with the information and support that they need to enable them to live independently and safely, while reducing unnecessary readmissions to hospital in Birmingham.

Royal Voluntary Service, a charity which helps older people live happy, independent lives, has launched Home & Well.  The aim of the project is to enable older people who are either at risk in the community or are being discharged from hospital with the help they need necessary to live healthy and enjoyable lives. We will do this by training volunteers within the community to work with healthcare practitioners and create individualised packages of support for older people at risk. The volunteers will be made fully aware of all services available within the community that are accessible for older people in order to provide more holistically for their needs. The volunteers, recruited, checked, trained and managed by Royal Voluntary Service, will build a package of social support to complement the health and social care packages that are in place for the older person.

To make the project a success, Royal Voluntary Service is calling on local people to give up a couple of hours of their time each week to become a volunteer for the service, so that the charity can help as many older people in the community as possible.

Project Manager, Sally Williams, said: “This is a fantastic service and it will make a real difference to the lives of older people in the community.  From our work with older people we know that services such as this make a real difference to quality of life.

“However, to make the scheme a success, we need new volunteers who are willing to give up just a couple of hours of their time each week, to help those who need it most.”
