Wilson launches new series of Belfast historical maps
Finance Minister Sammy Wilson has launched the first in a range of historical maps being produced by Land & Property Services (LPS).
The Ballymena and Belfast maps are the first to be produced and the plan is to add to the range of prints available, initially concentrating on other cities and major towns in Northern Ireland.
The Minister said: "People from Northern Ireland have always had a great sense of pride in where they are from and their local community. While many people may have moved to other areas or even other countries for work or family reasons, they still continue to feel a sense of belonging and a great connection with where they came from. All generations like to retain a link to the townland or street they grew up in.
"In response to increasing customer interest in this area, LPS has begun to produce a number of prints, starting with Ballymena and Belfast, from its historical mapping archive, with dates ranging from mid 1800 to 1960. These maps not only demonstrate what particular towns or cities looked like in years gone by, but when compared with the up to date maps, they highlight just how far Northern Ireland has come in terms of growth and regeneration.
"The plan is to add to the range of prints available, so over the next year we will hopefully have maps available for a number of other areas."
The historical maps are produced on high quality photographic paper, and are priced at £25.00 for an A3 print or £35.00 for an A2 print. They are available to buy in the LPS Customer Information Centres in Academy House, Ballymena and Lincoln Buildings, Belfast or by emailing oldmaps@osni.gov.uk.
