Secret Belfast Garden ready for discovery
More than roses will be on show during the annual Rose Week, which begins at the Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park on Tuesday, 14 July.
The flower spectacular, which attracts thousands of visitors, is the more public face of the park.
This year however, Belfast City Council is offering a chance to discover other aspects of the park with a Secret Garden Stroll on the evening of Wednesday, 15 July and a Birds, Bees and Buildings walk looking at biodiversity in the park on Thursday afternoon.
Rose Week organiser, Alice Blennerhassett, explained that the Council is keen to promote its green credentials by encouraging visitors to use public transport to visit the event, and taking the opportunity to learn more about the environment and how we can better care for it.
"We will have a display in the Marquee entitled `A Peek at the Park` which will cover the heritage and biodiversity in the park but the Birds, Bees and Buildings walk will offer the opportunity for people to discover more about it themselves.
"The Secret Garden stroll, organised in conjunction with Lagan Valley Regional Park will focus on the less well known aspects of Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon. It takes place at 7pm on Wednesday, 15 July with those interested meeting at the Stables car park. You can get more details by ringing 028 9049 1922."
In addition to these walks there will be daily music performances from concert, flute and accordion bands to jazz or ethnic African music, advice on roses, competitions in the Rose Gardens, dancing displays, face painting and balloon modelling, and more active events like laser quest, climbing tower and soccer shoot-out.
