Murphy welcomes opening of Dublin to Cork Motorway
Roads Minister, Conor Murphy, today welcomed the opening of the final section of the Dublin to Cork motorway. The final section of the motorway was formally opened this afternoon by the Taoiseach, Brian Cowan.
The opening of this road is significant for the island of Ireland as motorists will now benefit from enhanced safety standards and reduced journey times, on the journey between Cork and Belfast.
Commenting on the opening of the final section of the road, Minister Murphy said: "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Taoiseach, Minister Dempsey, the National Roads Authority and all those involved in the completion of this final section of the Dublin to Cork Motorway. This is an important milestone in the development of roads infrastructure throughout the island of Ireland, and particularly on the Eastern Seaboard Corridor where connectivity between the island's major ports and cities will be significantly improved. The extensive work being carried out at Beechill to Cloghogue (near Newry), and the proposal to dual the remaining section of single carriageway on the A8 between Belfast and Larne, is a further example of co-operation across the island of Ireland and the economic benefits of this, especially in the midst of the current economic downturn, will be enjoyed by all its citizens."
