Irish Champions defend titles in Belfast

Olympians Derval O`Rourke and Paul Hession successfully defended their titles at the Belfast City Council-backed Irish Indoor Athletics Championships, held at the Odyssey Arena on 6 and 7 February.

The duo were the star attractions at two-day meeting, which produced a number of exhilarating performances as athletes from across Ireland battled it out for national titles.

The championships also provided athletes with an opportunity to show form and achieve qualification standards for the IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships, which take place in Doha in March.

Derval O`Rourke opened up her indoor season in style by winning the women`s 60m hurdles in 8.18 seconds to take her tenth national title.

In the men`s 60m, Paul Hession successfully defended his title, winning in 6.76 seconds. The Athenry athlete, however, will not be competing in the world championships, as he is focusing instead on the European Championships. Nineteen year old Dean Adams also impressed with a personal best of 6.89 seconds to finish second.

In the women`s 60m final, Clare Brady was an impressive winner, running 7.35 seconds - well inside the qualifying standard for the world championships and earning her the `Athlete of the Meet` award. Defending champion Ailis McSweeney was second, with Niamh Whelan third.

Nick Hogan took the men`s 400m title.

In the field events, Kelly Proper took her fifth national title - and then went on to do the double, taking the 200m title.

There was a new Irish U23 record in the women`s pole vault, with Claire Wilkinson jumping 3.80m. Mary McLoone defended her triple jump title, while Caoimhe King on her own Irish junior record to finish second.

In the men`s high jump, favourite Kourosh Foroughi lost out to Barry Pender.

In the women`s 3000m, Deirdre Byrne produced another quality performance to take the title. Byrne also lined up in the women`s 1500m and lead until the final lap, before finishing second to Kelly McNiece.

Former European junior champion, Colin Costello, showed a return to form to win the Men`s 1500m, while the men`s 3000m produced an exciting race with Alan O`Brien winning his first senior indoor title, and James McIlroy took control of the men`s 800m final from the gun to win ahead of the in form David McCarthy.

In the women`s 800m, Ciara Mageean, produced another top class performance, taking the title in a new junior indoor record of 2.07.82 minutes.

Three Olympians - Robert Heffernan, Colin Griffin and Jamie Costin - line up in the men`s 5km walk, with Heffernan taking the lead from the gun to win ahead of Griffin in second and Costin third.

The women`s 3k walk was won by Slovakian Zuzana Malikova with a world lead time and personal best of 12.36.43 minutes. Reigning champion Laura Reynolds finished second and Irish junior record holder Kate Veale was third.
