Fairtrade Belfast welcomes Nestlé Kit Kat move
Fairtrade Belfast has welcomed the announcement by chocolate manufacturers Nestlé that one of its premier brands, Kit Kat, will switch to using Fairtrade chocolate early in 2010.
The first Fairtrade certified Kit Kat four-finger bars will arrive on shop shelves in mid-January, benefitting thousands of farmers in Côte d`Ivoire. As well as the Fairtrade price - or market price if higher - for the cocoa, farmers` organisations receive additional Fairtrade premium payments to invest in long-term community and business development projects of their own choice, such as education and healthcare, the environment or their businesses.
"This is fantastic news and another great boost for the Fairtrade movement," reacted Dr Christopher Stange, Chairman of Fairtrade Belfast.
"Following on from Cadbury switching their leading Dairy Milk brand to Fairtrade cocoa earlier this year, this is increasing the diversity in choice of Fairtrade products available to the consumer, and also making sure that Fairtrade is very much part of the mainstream retail product range," added Dr Stange.
Fairtrade Belfast is hosting the first international Fairtrade conference to be held in the city on 20 January.
