City Hall off-limits for licensed trade awards

Staff from off-licences across Belfast were the toast of City Hall for their help in tackling underage and on-street drinking.

More than 40 employees have completed the `Off-limits` training programme, delivered by Belfast City Council as part of its Get Home Safe partnership, and in association with the Federation of Retail Licensed Trade (FRLT).

Councillor Pat McCarthy, chairman of Belfast City Council`s Health and Environmental Services Committee. said:

"Like many other major cities, Belfast is working hard to tackle the problem of underage and binge drinking, as well as on-street drinking, and the council is committed to doing all it can to help create a safer city for all.

"This training programme is evidence that the Get Home Safe initiative and Community Safety Partnership is delivering tangible results. It`s about building confidence and empowering employees, and as frontline staff, they have an important role to play.

"I`d like to congratulate all those that took part and commend both them and their employers for taking this issue seriously and for being committed to our joint aim of the responsible sale of alcohol in our city."

The training is based around four key messages:

  • be alert
  • be firm
  • be legal
  • be careful

It reminds off-licence staff of their legal obligations not to serve alcohol to people under the age of 18, and to ask for identification for proof of age.

Councillor McCarthy added: "As a council, we don`t want to spoil anyone`s fun but it is important that people get the message to stay safe and be responsible when it comes to alcohol."

The training was delivered by Belfast City Council in partnership with the FRLT during the last two months.

It follows on from another successful training scheme targeted at Belfast`s licensed premises.

Last November staff from 19 Belfast pubs completed their `Counter Measures` training which is aimed at promoting responsible drinking in the city`s nightspots, as well as reducing binge drinking.
