There will be no reason for young people of Chineham to be bored after September as Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council starts work on a new community games area this week.
Being built following feedback from consultation in the area that 11 to 16 year olds needed more recreational facilities, the centrepiece of the new area in Great Binfields Lane, Chineham will be a covered Multi Use Game Area, (MUGA) which is only the second one in the country. The MUGA is a floodlit enclosed ball court marked for a range of sports, with a canopy cover, providing a space for young people to have a ‘kick about' and play games.
The area will also feature a range of dynamic play equipment and a zip wire, all set in a landscaped park. Thorough consideration has been given to the safety and security of the site and it is planned that young people will be given some responsibility for the area, even deciding on what it will be named.
Work has now started on the site and Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure Cllr Keith Chapman said: "This is very exciting for the young people of Chineham, especially as it has been requested by the community for the community. The young people we spoke to were vocal about the lack of leisure facilities for their age range. We also held drop-in sessions with residents to ensure we took into consideration the opinion of the whole community. I've seen the plans and this is a wonderful facility to be enjoyed by generations of young people in Chineham."
Funded by developers' money, this games area will be ready at the end of September with an official launch in October.
