The charity Crimestoppers has recently given out a cash reward to a member of the public from Essex who had valuable information which led to the conviction of a thief.
It was the first time in three years that a cash reward has been requested in Essex. Less than 2 per cent of people nationally claim the rewards they are entitled to.
Crimestoppers pay cash rewards of up to £1,000 if the information given to Crimestoppers leads to one or more people being arrested and charged.
Hannah Daws, Crimestoppers spokesman, said: "Since the charity was established 20 years ago we have offered cash rewards for information that leads to an arrest and in recent years very few people have claimed these. Claiming a reward does not compromise our guarantee of anonymity - no one will know you called Crimestoppers. Check our website for further details."
Sgt Nathalie Carr from Essex Police said: "By calling Crimestoppers you will not only be helping police solve a crime but you could claim a cash reward. Between April and December nearly one thousand people have called Crimestoppers in Essex with information that could help us solve crime in the county."
When members of the public call Crimestoppers they are given a code that they can state when they call to collect the reward. Once a suspect has been charged, the reward amount is decided by the chairman of the local Crimestoppers board of volunteers.
Crimestoppers is totally independent of Essex Police.
